Overview
Thiruvinnagar, known as Oppiliyappan Koil, is a celebrated Divya Desam located about 5 km north of Kumbakonam in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Oppiliyappan — meaning 'the Incomparable One' or 'the One Without Blemish' — Vishnu who manifested here to marry the earth goddess Bhudevi. Thirumangai Alvar and Thiruppan Alvar both sang pasurams here, with the former's Periya Thirumozhi verses being particularly exalted. A striking and unique feature of this temple is that no salt is used in any food cooked as prasad or offering — this tradition dates to the legend of Bhudevi's father (Maharishi Marichi) insisting that his daughter, still a child, could not add salt to food because she was too young. Vishnu, as the devoted bridegroom, has honoured this restriction forever. The temple is a large, beautiful complex with a prominent gopuram visible from the Kumbakonam plains.
Sacred Narrative
Maharishi Marichi was performing penance when he found a baby girl (Bhudevi / Tulasi) in a lotus. He raised her. Vishnu desired to marry her. When the sage agreed, he cautioned that his daughter being a child did not know how to add salt properly to food. Vishnu promised to eat whatever unsalted food she prepared, forever. The wedding took place at this very spot, and the temple enshrines the divine couple in this eternal marital covenant.
