A coastal Divya Desam south of Chennai where Lord Nithyakalyana Perumal perpetually blesses devotees as the ever-auspicious bridegroom — Thirumangai Alvar sang movingly of the sea breeze mingling with divine grace here.

Overview

Thiruvidandai is situated on the East Coast Road (ECR) about 40 km south of Chennai, set in a coastal landscape close to the Bay of Bengal. The presiding deity is Nithyakalyana Perumal — the one whose auspicious marriage celebration is eternal and ever-fresh. Vishnu stands here in a gracious blessing posture (Thiruvuruvam), flanked by Sri Devi and Bhu Devi. Thirumangai Alvar sang ten Mangalasasanam pasurams for this Desam in the Periya Tirumozhi, describing the sea breeze carrying the fragrance of flowers offered to the lord. The temple architecture shows Pallava-Chola layering, with a distinctive slender gopuram. The goddess Komalavalli is the consort. Nithyakalyana Perumal is especially invoked for marriage-related prayers — women seeking good husbands and couples seeking conjugal harmony visit in large numbers. The coastal setting gives this Desam a distinctive freshness among the 108.

Sacred Narrative

The legend here involves the sage Bhrigu, who once wished to test the three principal deities. After his encounters with Brahma and Shiva, he came to Vishnu, who was reclining and absorbed in divine sleep. Bhrigu kicked Vishnu's chest in irritation; Vishnu, ever gentle, apologized and pressed the sage's foot in concern. Moved beyond expectation, Bhrigu declared Vishnu the most worthy of worship, and this spot on the coast became the place of that eternal auspiciousness.
