A Divya Desam in Kanchipuram where Lord Azhagiya Singa Perumal (the beautiful lion-form Vishnu) is worshipped as the Narasimha manifestation — a powerful, intimate shrine where Thirumangai Alvar sang of the lion's roar that shatters all evil.
Overview
Thiruvelukkai is one of the five Divya Desams within Kanchipuram, and the only one in the city where Vishnu is worshipped in the Narasimha (man-lion) form. The deity is Azhagiya Singa Perumal — the beautiful lion lord — a name that unites the fierce Narasimha with the aesthetic sensibility of Alvar devotion (azhagiya = beautiful). Thirumangai Alvar sang Mangalasasanam here with particular intensity, describing the lion's roar resonating through the world and the deity's embrace of Prahlada. The temple is characteristically compact, with a distinctive stepped-pyramid shikhara (vimana) style visible from the street. The goddess is Kamalavalli Thayar. The kshetra is part of the five-Divya-Desam Kanchipuram circuit and can be visited in combination with Varadaraja, Ulagalanda, Yathothkari, and Thiru Ooragam. The sanctum atmosphere is notably intense for a Narasimha shrine.
Sacred Narrative
The Puranic story of Narasimha defeating Hiranyakashipu is the foundation, but the Kanchipuram tradition adds that after tearing apart the demon, Narasimha's fury was so immense that even the gods could not approach. It was Prahlada himself who calmed the deity with hymns at this exact spot, and Vishnu in his beautiful-lion form (azhagiya singa) became gentle and approachable — teaching that devotion disarms even infinite divine wrath.
