Overview
Thiruvazhundur is a Divya Desam in the Sirkazhi taluk of Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, where Vishnu is worshipped as Amaruviappan — 'the Imperishable Father' or 'the One who is beyond death and decay' (amara = immortal, undying). Thirumangai Alvar, who traversed this entire coastal belt composing hymns, sang pasurams for this kshetra in his Periya Thirumozhi. Thiruvazhundur is part of the extraordinarily dense cluster of Divya Desams in the Nagapattinam coastal belt — a region that was a major centre of trade, culture, and pilgrimage in the Chola period. The sacred tank (pushkarini) at this temple is particularly revered. The consort goddess is Komalavalli Thayar. This site, like others in the belt, has deep connections to the Chola royal patrons who renovated and endowed many of these temples between the 9th and 13th centuries CE.
Sacred Narrative
The name Amaruviappan evokes the immortality (amaram) of Vishnu — beyond the cycle of birth and death that governs all creation. The local tradition holds that Indra, fearing death (which even gods cannot escape in Hindu cosmology), worshipped Vishnu here and received the assurance that devotion to Vishnu transcends mortality. The deity here thus represents the ultimate refuge from impermanence — the deathless dimension that lies at the heart of all existence.
