A Divya Desam in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, where Lord Devanatha Perumal (another manifestation of Vishnu as Lord of the Gods) is enshrined — praised by Thirumangai Alvar — on the banks of the sea near the Coromandel coast.

Overview

Thiruvanthipuram is a Divya Desam on the Coromandel coast in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is sometimes described as Devanatha Perumal or as a Narasimha (man-lion) form of Vishnu. Thirumangai Alvar sang pasurams for this kshetra in his Periya Thirumozhi during his pilgrimage along the Tamil Nadu coast. The coastal setting here — with the Bay of Bengal nearby — gives this temple a distinct atmosphere from the inland Divya Desams. The Cuddalore coast holds considerable historical significance as an area of ancient maritime trade, and several important Hindu temples line this Coromandel stretch. Thiruvanthipuram fits into the Cuddalore Divya Desam cluster alongside Thiruvahindrapuram, Thiruppuliyur, Thiruchirupuliyur, and Thirukarambhanur — one of the most concentrated Vaishnava pilgrimage zones on the Tamil Nadu coast.

Sacred Narrative

The local tradition holds that the earth-shattering roar of Vishnu as Narasimha (man-lion) — when he destroyed the demon Hiranyakashipu to save his devotee Prahlada — was heard by the gods from heaven. The divine sound waves settled at this coastal location, and the gods came here to worship the pacified form of Narasimha, asking him to reveal himself in his gentle, serene aspect as Devanatha. The site thus represents the transition from terrifying power to serene grace.
