A Divya Desam in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, where Lord Vallabha Perumal (the dear, beloved Vishnu) is enshrined in the Sree Vallabha temple — praised by Nammalvar — set on the banks of the Manimala river in the lush Kuttanad backwater region.

Overview

Thiruvalla is one of the Kerala Divya Desams, situated in Pathanamthitta district on the banks of the Manimala river — close to the famous Kuttanad backwater region, the 'rice bowl of Kerala'. The presiding deity is Vallabha Perumal — Vishnu as 'the Beloved' or 'the Dear One' (vallabha = beloved, dear). The Sree Vallabha temple is a large, active temple complex following the Kerala tradition of architecture — low-slung rooflines, sloping metal-tile roofs, woodwork, and mural paintings inside. Nammalvar, in his Tiruvoimozhi, addressed the deity here with moving affection. The temple is managed under the Travancore Devaswom Board and is one of the most visited temples in Pathanamthitta district. The Kerala Divya Desams are geographically spread from Thiruvananthapuram in the south to Thrissur in the north, and Thiruvalla occupies the central Kerala position in this network.

Sacred Narrative

The name Vallabha ('Beloved') encodes a profound myth: Vishnu appeared at this site to a devotee who called him not by his cosmic names but simply as 'my beloved one' (en vallabha) — with the intimacy of a lover addressing the beloved. Vishnu, moved by this non-hierarchical tenderness, declared he would remain here by the name of Vallabha forever. The Manimala river running past the temple is seen as the divine Manimala (jewel-garlanded stream) that Vishnu adorns.
