Overview
Thiruvaikundam — the earthly Vaikunta, the divine abode — is a Divya Desam on the northern bank of the Tamirabarani river in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) district, at the town called Srivaikuntam. The name itself is extraordinary: this kshetra is believed to be the earthly replica of Vishnu's celestial abode, and the deity Vaikunthanatha (lord of Vaikunta) reclines in the Bhujanga Sayana posture. Nammalvar sang Mangalasasanam here in the Tiruvoimozhi with profound verses declaring that one need not journey to the actual Vaikunta when this place exists on earth. The Tamirabarani river flowing past the temple and the nearby confluence with the sea (the sacred sangam at the coast) is considered a moksha-granting tirtha. The temple architecture is predominantly Pandya-style with some Vijayanagara additions. The goddess consort is Komalavalli (Vaikunta Valli Thayar). Vaikunta Ekadasi is the principal festival.
Sacred Narrative
The origin myth holds that the gods, wishing to descend and worship without making the full cosmic journey to Vaikunta, appealed to Vishnu. Vishnu responded by manifesting his celestial abode entirely on earth at this site on the Tamirabarani bank, making it so identical to the original Vaikunta that any soul dying here or surrendering here would achieve moksha equivalent to reaching the divine realm. The Tamirabarani river running past the temple is seen as the heavenly Viraja river transposed to earth.
