A Divya Desam in Cuddalore district where Lord Devanatha Perumal is enshrined on the banks of the Gadilam river — praised by Thirumangai Alvar — a supremely beautiful temple whose setting by a flowing river amid lush greenery draws pilgrims and aesthetes alike.
Overview
Thiruvahindrapuram is a Divya Desam in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, situated on the banks of the Gadilam (Kedilam) river in lush, verdant surroundings. The presiding deity is Devanatha Perumal — the Lord of the gods (deva = god, natha = lord) — Vishnu in his supreme sovereignty as the master of all divine beings. Thirumangai Alvar composed some of his most lyrical pasurams for this kshetra in the Periya Thirumozhi, and the natural beauty of the riverbank setting clearly inspired the verse-imagery. The temple complex includes a grand tank, multiple prakarams, and a prominent eastern gopuram. The goddess consort is Hemabhujavalli Thayar. The Cuddalore Divya Desam cluster (Thiruvahindrapuram, Thiruppuliyur, Thiruchirupuliyur, Thirukarambhanur) forms one of the most rewarding regional circuits in Tamil Nadu, and Thiruvahindrapuram is considered the anchor temple of this group.
Sacred Narrative
The myth of this kshetra centres on Indra, the king of the gods, who came here to worship Vishnu after being afflicted by the curse of the sage Durvasa (who had cursed Indra's kingdom to wither). Vishnu instructed Indra to churn the Ocean of Milk, which ultimately produced Amrita (nectar of immortality) and restored prosperity to the heavens. At this spot on the Gadilam river, Indra completed the churning rituals and worshipped Vishnu as Devanatha — the Lord of the gods — in supreme gratitude.
