A Divya Desam near Kanchipuram where Lord Vijayasana Perumal is worshipped as the seated victorious lord — uniquely associated with Indra's restoration of divine power and praised by Thirumangai Alvar.
Overview
Thiruputkuzhi is a Divya Desam situated about 25 km from Kanchipuram, on the road toward Tindivanam. The presiding deity is Vijayasana Perumal — the lord seated in the posture of victory (vijaya = victory, asana = posture/throne) — who is worshipped in a seated posture. Thirumangai Alvar sang Mangalasasanam here. The name of the place, Putkuzhi, refers to a pit associated with a story involving Indra and his elephant Airavata. The temple is one of the smaller Divya Desams in the Kanchipuram circuit and offers an unhurried darshan compared to the grand Varadaraja complex. The goddess consort is Maragathaval Thayar (Emerald Goddess). The architecture is Dravidian in style with a modest gopuram and a sacred tank. The landscape around the temple is open and tree-shaded, providing a pleasant pilgrimage atmosphere.
Sacred Narrative
The legend holds that Indra, king of the gods, was cursed by the sage Durvasa and lost his divine power and radiance. His elephant Airavata, also weakened, fell into a pit at this spot. When Indra prayed to Vishnu for restoration, Vishnu appeared here as Vijayasana — seated in a position of unassailable divine authority — and restored Indra's power and Airavata's strength, sending them back to lead the Devas to victory over the asuras. The pit (kuzhi) where Airavata fell gave the place its name.
