A Divya Desam in the Tirunelveli district where Lord Nindra Narayana is worshipped under a sacred tamarind tree — the site where Vishnu stood eternally in the shade of the puliangudi tree praised by Nammalvar.
Overview
Thiruppulingudi is a Divya Desam in Tirunelveli district on the south bank of the Tamirabarani river. The name derives from the puliangudi or puliyan tree (related to the tamarind family) that sheltered the divine. The presiding deity is Nindra Narayana — Vishnu who stands eternally — in this case standing under the sacred tree's shade. Nammalvar sang Mangalasasanam for this kshetra in the Tiruvoimozhi, and the verses have a particular tenderness, describing the shade of the tree and the river breeze creating a divine bower. The setting — riverbank, sacred tree, standing deity — embodies the most archetypal South Indian Vishnu worship environment. The goddess consort is Mangalasasana Nayaki Thayar. The Chola-Pandya architectural style of the temple blends naturally with the riverine landscape. The kshetra is considered especially auspicious for ancestral rites (pitru karma) because of the sacred sangam nearby.
Sacred Narrative
The Puranic legend at this kshetra holds that the king Muchukuntha, after a great war fought at the gods' request, was so weary that Vishnu himself stood beside him under the shade of the puliangudi tree on the Tamirabarani bank, allowing the exhausted king to rest in divine protection. The king's devotion was so pure that Vishnu declared this the permanent place of his standing presence — eternally offering shade and protection to all who seek it.
