A Divya Desam hill temple near Kanchipuram where Lord Sowmya Narayana Perumal is enshrined — known as the Gajendra Moksham site — praised by Thirumangai Alvar, set on a granite hill in the sacred city of Kanchipuram.
Overview
Thirupparthikundram is a Divya Desam situated on a low granite hill (kundram = hill) near Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Sowmya Narayana Perumal — the gentle, serene Narayana. This temple is associated with the celebrated Gajendra Moksham episode — the story of an elephant (gajendra) whose leg was caught by a crocodile in a lake. After a long struggle, the elephant surrendered completely to Vishnu, who descended and liberated him. The site is traditionally identified with where this liberation occurred. Thirumangai Alvar sang beautiful pasurams for this kshetra. The hill setting — unusual among the many Kanchipuram temples — gives the complex a distinctive character, with views over the surrounding plains. The temple is one of the eight Divya Desams within or around Kanchipuram, reflecting the city's exceptional Vaishnava sacred geography.
Sacred Narrative
The Gajendra Moksham myth is central: the elephant king Gajendra, once a king reborn as an elephant due to a sage's curse, was seized by a crocodile and struggled for a thousand years. Exhausted, he surrendered all pride and called out to Vishnu with a single lotus flower. Vishnu, on his Garuda vehicle, descended instantly and liberated both the elephant and the crocodile — who was himself a Gandharva reborn as a crocodile due to another curse. The site marks this act of instant divine grace.
