A Cauvery-delta Divya Desam near Kumbakonam where Vishnu is worshipped as Appakudathan Perumal, the lord who received the sacred water vessel, praised by Thirumangai Alvar.
Overview
Thirupereyil is a Divya Desam in Thanjavur district near Kumbakonam, set in the rice-rich Cauvery delta landscape that forms the densest cluster of Divya Desams in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity Appakudathan Perumal — 'the lord who received the water vessel (appakudam)' — is a form of Vishnu whose name encodes an important mythological event in which Vishnu accepted a ritual water-vessel as an act of supreme humility before his devotee.
Thirumangai Alvar, who made the Cauvery delta the centrepiece of his extensive Divya Desam pilgrimage, composed hymns here celebrating this quality of Vishnu's willingness to be served, touched, and approached by devoted souls regardless of their station. The temple follows the classic Chola-period architectural vocabulary found throughout the Thanjavur-Kumbakonam belt, with its stepped pyramidal vimana tower and pillared mandapams of granite.
Sacred Narrative
A devoted royal cook prepared sacred food every day for Vishnu's shrine, always carrying a vessel of holy water (appakudam) as part of the ritual. One day Vishnu appeared in the form of a Brahmin and asked the cook for the vessel. When the cook readily handed it over — giving up the ritual's most sacred implement without hesitation — Vishnu revealed himself and declared that such selfless devotion was the highest offering. He then manifested as Appakudathan, permanently holding the vessel to commemorate this act.
