Overview
Thirupadagam is one of the several Divya Desams located within or near Kanchipuram — the City of a Thousand Temples — in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity here is Trivikrama Perumal, Vishnu in the form that measured the entire universe in three giant strides (padas — steps) when he appeared as the dwarf Vamana before the demon-king Mahabali. The temple is celebrated in Thirumangai Alvar's Periya Thirumozhi. Kanchipuram's significance as a pilgrimage city is immense — it is one of the Sapta Puri (seven sacred cities of Hinduism) and hosts multiple Divya Desams including Varadaraja Perumal temple, Yathothkari temple, Thiruvelukkai, Thiru Ooragam, Thiruputkuzhi, and Thirupadagam itself. The temple preserves the Dravidian architectural tradition with a sacred tank and multiple shrines. Sri Vaishnavas following the Thenkalai tradition have long maintained this kshetra.
Sacred Narrative
The myth of Trivikrama — the three-striding Vishnu — is central here. Vishnu appeared as a dwarf brahmin before the generous Asura king Mahabali and asked for land covered by three steps. Mahabali agreed, whereupon Vishnu expanded to cosmic size, covered the entire earth in one stride, the heavens in a second, and placed his third foot on Mahabali's head. At Thirupadagam, the tradition holds that Vishnu's divine feet (padangal) touched this spot, consecrating the earth here with his cosmic stride.
