A Divya Desam on a sacred water-hill near Chennai where Lord Trivikrama (standing) and Ranganatha (reclining) are worshipped in two separate shrines within the same rocky hill complex — praised by Thirumangai Alvar.
Overview
Thiruneermalai (meaning the sacred water-hill) is a Divya Desam uniquely located on a rocky hill in what is now Chennai's rapidly urbanizing southern suburbs, near Pallavaram. This kshetra has two distinct Vishnu shrines on the same hill: Trivikrama worshipped in a rock-cut cave at the hillbase, and Ranganatha worshipped in a separate shrine at the hilltop. Both forms are counted as the same Divya Desam in the canonical list. Thirumangai Alvar sang Mangalasasanam for this Desam in the Periya Tirumozhi. The hill itself, though now surrounded by urban development, retains its rock-cut character — the Pallava-era cave temple elements are visible in the lower Trivikrama shrine. The name neermalai (water-hill) likely refers to a water source or spring on the hill. The goddess is Kowsalya Valli Thayar.
Sacred Narrative
The legend holds that Mahabali, after being sent to the netherworld by Trivikrama's foot, repeatedly ascended to earth in spirit form to witness the deity who had humbled him — not out of resentment but out of devotion. At this hill, Vishnu appeared to Mahabali simultaneously in both his standing Trivikrama form and his reclining Ranganatha form — showing the demon-king that the cosmic measurer and the cosmic dreamer are the same divine being. Mahabali's complete surrender is said to have occurred at this spot.
