Overview
Vaikuntha Vinnagaram is one of the eleven Divya Desams in the Thirunangur cluster. The name Vinnagaram means the celestial palace (vinn = sky/heaven, agaram = place/palace) — indicating a temple where Vishnu is worshipped as the celestial palace-dweller, present in the sky-realm that descends to earth at this spot. Thirumangai Alvar's Tiruppathanangal includes this among the eleven Thirunangur Desams. The Vinnagaram concept — a temple representing Vishnu's celestial dwelling transported to earth — appears across several Divya Desams; in the Thirunangur cluster this one represents the heaven-within-earth manifestation. The Thai Pournami Garuda Seva circuit includes this temple as one of the eleven processional stops. The intimate scale and the agricultural delta setting give even this theologically grand name a human, accessible quality.
Sacred Narrative
The legend holds that the god Indra, after restoring his power with Vishnu's grace, wished to create a replica of Vaikunta (the celestial palace) on earth so that devotees on earth could access divine space without departing from the material world. Vishnu agreed and descended from the celestial palace to this spot in the Kaveri delta — his very presence making the ground beneath a fragment of the eternal sky-palace, Vaikuntha.
