One of the eleven Thirunangur Divya Desams where Lord Devasiriya Perumal (the lord worshipped by the gods) is enshrined — part of the extraordinary Thirunangur Garuda Seva all-night festival circuit.
Overview
Thirutheyvanangudi is one of the eleven Divya Desams within the Thirunangur cluster in Nagapattinam district. The presiding deity is Devasiriya Perumal — the excellent lord who is worshipped by the very gods themselves (devas). The name captures the theological principle that even Brahma, Indra, and the celestial hierarchy direct their worship to Vishnu. Thirumangai Alvar composed Mangalasasanam for all eleven Thirunangur Desams in the Tiruppathanangal section of the Periya Tirumozhi, with vivid imagery of the river delta landscape, the paddy fields, and the divine presence woven into the rural fabric of the Kaveri delta. The Thirunangur Garuda Seva (Thai Pournami festival) is the collective celebration of all eleven temples, when all utsava murtis process through the night. The goddess consort at Thirutheyvanangudi is Komalavalli Thayar.
Sacred Narrative
The legend specific to Thirutheyvanangudi holds that the Devas, humbled after a cosmic defeat by asuras, came to this spot in the Kaveri delta in their entirety — all thirty-three crore (3.3 billion) of them — to collectively worship Vishnu. So many divine beings gathered at this point that the ground itself is said to have become permanently sacred, earning the name Thirutheyvanangudi — the holy town where the gods assembled.
