Overview
Thirucchembonsei (also written as Thirusempon Sei) is one of the eleven Thirunangur Divya Desams in Nagapattinam district. The presiding deity is Semponseyya Perumal — the lord who is made of/appears as brilliant gold (sem = bright, pon = gold, seyya = who makes or appears as). The golden radiance of the deity is said to transform the quality of light in the sanctum at dawn and dusk. Thirumangai Alvar sang Mangalasasanam as part of his eleven-temple Tiruppathanangal for the Thirunangur cluster. The small, intimate scale of these Thirunangur temples — each a gem-like shrine embedded in the delta agricultural landscape — creates a profoundly different pilgrimage experience from the grand urban Divya Desams. The annual Garuda Seva sees this and all other ten temples join the all-night procession on Thai Pournami.
Sacred Narrative
The myth for Thirucchembonsei involves the divine smith Vishvakarma, who once melted all the gold of the three worlds to create a divine form worthy of Vishnu. When the molten gold was poured, it cooled into the form of the deity here — Semponseyya Perumal — who absorbed all that worldly golden material and stood as pure divine radiance. The legend teaches that all material value ultimately dissolves into the divine presence.
