Overview
Thiru Thantheykanam (also written Thiruthantheykanam) is one of the eleven Divya Desams in the Thirunangur cluster, Nagapattinam district. The presiding deity is Sreenivasar — a form of Vishnu closely associated with the celestial abode's beauty (Sreenivasa = abode of Sri/Lakshmi), here worshipped in a standing posture adorned with the full array of divine ornaments. Thirumangai Alvar's Tiruppathanangal hymns for this Desam dwell particularly on the deity's ornaments — the kireetam (crown), divine earrings, and the sacred thread — as embodiments of divine grace radiating outward. The village setting, paddy fields, and the quiet Kaveri delta atmosphere contrast with the grandeur of the ornament descriptions. The goddess consort is Komalavalli Thayar. This Desam participates in the annual all-night Garuda Seva on Thai Pournami (January full moon).
Sacred Narrative
The legend holds that Vishnu once asked Lakshmi to select the most beautiful village on earth where he could appear at his most adorned. Lakshmi chose this spot in the Kaveri delta for its golden paddy fields, shimmering water channels, and the gentle quality of the light. Vishnu appeared as Sreenivasar — wearing all his celestial ornaments at once — declaring that this village, chosen by Lakshmi for its earthly beauty, would mirror the beauty of his celestial abode.
