Overview
Thiru Arimeya Vinnagaram is one of the eleven Divya Desams in the Thirunangur cluster in Nagapattinam district. The presiding deity is Arimeya Vinnagara Perumal — the Vinnagaram (sky-palace) form of Vishnu who is ari-meya (excelled, beyond compare). The theological name combines the celestial palace concept of Vinnagaram with the superlative quality of being beyond any peer or comparison. Thirumangai Alvar's Tiruppathanangal hymns for this and the neighbouring Thirunangur Desams celebrate the paradox of the highest divine being choosing to dwell in the delta paddy villages where common people live and work. The Thai Pournami Garuda Seva is the annual climax. The intimate scale of the shrine — in which the cosmic and the local coexist — is the heart of the Thirunangur pilgrimage experience.
Sacred Narrative
The legend for Arimeya Vinnagaram holds that the celestial musicians (Gandharvas) once descended to the Kaveri delta on a musical pilgrimage, seeking the rarest divine sound. They heard the conch and flute of Vishnu at this spot, which they declared incomparable (arimeya = that which has no measure/comparison). The Gandharvas' testimony to the incomparable divine music consecrated this spot as the sky-palace where the most exalted divine sounds are eternally present.
