A Divya Desam near Poonamallee (Chennai) associated with the saint-philosopher Boothath Alvar and especially Thirumazhisai Alvar — where Lord Jyothisaroopa Perumal (the luminous form of Vishnu) is enshrined — the site of one of the most famous legends of Alvar devotion.
Overview
Thirumazhisai is a Divya Desam in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, located near Poonamallee on the outskirts of Chennai. It is the birthplace and primary sacred site of Thirumazhisai Alvar — one of the twelve Alvars and a remarkable figure who began life in a Shaiva household, explored multiple philosophical traditions, and ultimately became one of the most celebrated Vaishnava saints. The presiding deity is Jyothisaroopa Perumal — Vishnu as the 'Luminous Form' (jyothi = light/luminosity, saroopa = form) — emphasising Vishnu as the inner light of consciousness. Thirumazhisai Alvar composed his celebrated Thirucchanda Viruththam and Naanmukan Thiruvandhadhi here. The temple also has an important connection to Boothath Alvar. The famous legend in which Thirumazhisai Alvar commanded a king who disrespected his disciple Kanikannan — and Vishnu himself reportedly walked alongside the Alvar when he left the city — is one of the defining stories of Tamil Vaishnava bhakti.
Sacred Narrative
The legend of Thirumazhisai Alvar and Kanikannan: Kanikannan, the Alvar's disciple, was disrespected by a local king and expelled from the town. Thirumazhisai Alvar composed a verse addressing the deity: 'If my Kanikannan goes, I go; if I go, Vishnu Chitta (Periyalvar) goes; if Periyalvar goes, you (the Lord) must also pack up.' The deity Jyothisaroopa Perumal reportedly began rolling up his serpent bed (Adi Shesha) to leave — at which point the king, terrified, recalled Kanikannan and begged forgiveness.
