The Divya Desam in Sivaganga district where Lord Sowmya Narayana Perumal (Vishnu) is enshrined — famous as the place where Ramanujacharya received the Ashtakshara mantra and then proclaimed it to all, revolutionising Vaishnava philosophy.
Overview
Thirukoshtiyur is one of the most historically significant of all 108 Divya Desams, located in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Sowmya Narayana Perumal (the serene, gentle Vishnu), and the goddess consort is Komalavalli Nachiyar. Thirumangai Alvar sang pasurams here in his Periya Thirumozhi. However, the event that gave Thirukoshtiyur a unique place in Vaishnava history occurred in the 12th century: the great philosopher-saint Ramanujacharya journeyed here eighteen times, each time being turned away by his guru Gosthipurna (Thirukoshtiyur Nambi), who finally revealed the sacred Ashtakshara mantra (Om Namo Narayanaya) to him — strictly to be kept secret on pain of hell. Ramanuja, overwhelmed by compassion, climbed the temple gopuram and proclaimed the mantra aloud to the assembled multitude, declaring that if he alone suffered for revealing it, that was preferable to keeping liberation locked away from all. This act of radical egalitarianism transformed Vaishnava tradition.
Sacred Narrative
The sacred myth intertwines with history: Gosthipurna Nambi, instructed by the deity to pass the Ashtakshara only to the worthy, tested Ramanuja through repeated rejection. When Ramanuja finally received the mantra and shared it with everyone, Vishnu himself is said to have appeared and affirmed Ramanuja's act — that a devotee who opens the gates of liberation to all is dearer to him than one who guards it jealously.
