The Divya Desam in Kumbakonam where Vishnu manifests as Chakrapani — the sole form in the 108 where he holds the Sudarshana Chakra as his primary emblem — celebrated by Thirumangai Alvar.

Overview

The Chakrapani temple is the second of three Divya Desams within Kumbakonam (the ancient Thirukkudanthai) and one of the most theologically distinctive in the entire 108. Here Vishnu is worshipped exclusively as Chakrapani — the bearer of the Sudarshana Chakra — who stands in a heroic posture displaying the spinning disc that destroys adharma. Thirumangai Alvar specifically sang Mangalasasanam for this kshetra in the Periya Tirumozhi, highlighting the Sudarshana Chakra's significance in cosmic protection. The temple layout is compact compared to Sarangapani, but its sculptural programme is rich, with detailed carvings of the ten Avatars of Vishnu. The sanctum is distinguished by the absence of the typical weapons cluster — only the chakra is paramount. Goddess Komalavalli is worshipped as consort. The annual Chakra Puja during Sudarshana Jayanti is the most important festival here.

Sacred Narrative

The Puranic narrative holds that the gods (Devas) were being defeated by asuras and approached Vishnu for protection. Vishnu in his most dynamic protective aspect appeared here as Chakrapani — chakra raised and spinning — and destroyed the demonic forces. The site was thus consecrated as the place where divine protection is most direct and immediate, and devotees come here specifically to pray for removal of obstacles and enemies.
