A Divya Desam in Villupuram district where Lord Trivikrama Perumal is worshipped as the Trivikrama who measured the cosmos — situated on the banks of the Pennai (Ponnaiyar) river, praised by Nammalvar, Thirumangai Alvar, and Thirumalisai Alvar.
Overview
Thirukkovilur is a historically significant Divya Desam on the banks of the Ponnaiyar (Pennai) river in Villupuram district, about 60 km from Pondicherry. The presiding deity is Trivikramaswami — Vishnu in the three-stride cosmic form — worshipped in a temple complex that has been revered since at least the early medieval period. Three Alvars — Nammalvar, Thirumangai Alvar, and Thirumalisai Alvar — sang Mangalasasanam here, making it one of the more heavily hymned Desams in the Tamil Nadu circuit. The river Ponnaiyar flows past the temple, and the riverfront setting enhances the pilgrimage experience. The goddess consort is Komalavalli Thayar (also called Poongothai Nachiyar here). The town of Thirukkovilur is also historically known as the birthplace of the Alvar saint Thirumalisai Alvar, adding further hagiographic significance to the kshetra.
Sacred Narrative
The Vamana-Trivikrama mythology is the doctrinal foundation, but the Thirukkovilur tradition links the Ponnaiyar river specifically to the waters that flowed down from Trivikrama's celestial foot-stride — the same waters that later became the Ganga. The Ponnaiyar is thus venerated here as a fragment of the sacred cascade, and bathing in it before temple darshan is considered especially purifying.
