A Divya Desam on the Tamirabarani in deep southern Tamil Nadu where Lord Vaikunthanatha is worshipped in a standing form — one of three Tamirabarani-side Divya Desams, praised by Nammalvar with verses of rare philosophical depth.
Overview
Thirukkolur is a Divya Desam situated on the Tamirabarani river in the Tirunelveli district, close to the cluster of deep-south Divya Desams at Srivaikuntam and Thiruppulingudi. The presiding deity is Vaikunthanatha — lord of the celestial abode — worshipped here in a standing posture, in contrast to the reclining form at Srivaikuntam. Nammalvar sang extraordinary Mangalasasanam here in the Tiruvoimozhi; in fact, the Tiruvoimozhi itself is said to have concluded at Thirukkolur with Nammalvar's final mystical experience and liberation (moksha). The tradition holds that Nammalvar attained the divine abode from this kshetra, making it one of the most sacred sites in Vaishnava hagiography. The goddess consort is Komalavalli (Sengamala Valli Thayar). The Tamirabarani river setting is peaceful and the temple retains a quiet, contemplative atmosphere befitting a site of spiritual culmination.
Sacred Narrative
The tradition holds that it was at Thirukkolur that Nammalvar — perhaps the greatest of all Alvars — experienced his final liberation. After composing the Tiruvoimozhi in a state of divine rapture, Nammalvar sat under the tamarind tree at this kshetra and was taken directly to Vaikunta by Vishnu who descended in his golden chariot (garudaseva). The tree under which Nammalvar sat in meditation — the Tamarind tree of the Alvar — is revered to this day.
