A compact Divya Desam in the Nagapattinam district where Lord Trivikrama is worshipped in his cosmic-stride form — Thirumangai Alvar's pasurams here describe the sky as the deity's garment.
Overview
Thirukkannangudi is one of the smaller Divya Desams in the Nagapattinam district cluster, set in the flat Kaveri delta landscape. The presiding deity here is again Trivikrama — Vishnu in his cosmic stride form, one of the most cosmologically expansive of all Vishnu manifestations — distinguished from the Trivikrama at Sirkazhi by the specific set of Alvar hymns and local mythological tradition. Thirumangai Alvar sang Mangalasasanam here in the Periya Tirumozhi, with verses describing Trivikrama's stride as extending beyond the sky itself. The small gopuram and intimate inner sanctum create a concentrated spiritual atmosphere. The goddess is Kannapura Nayaki Thayar. The temple is part of the dense pilgrimage cluster in the Sirkazhi–Nagapattinam area and is typically visited on the same day as Thirukannapuram and Thirukkannamangai.
Sacred Narrative
The same foundational myth of Vamana-Trivikrama applies here, but the local tradition emphasises the specific moment when Trivikrama's raised foot pierced the top of the cosmic egg (Brahmanda) and the waters of the heavens (which later became the Ganga) washed over the deity's foot, flowing down as the divine river. This kshetra is held to be where that celestial breakthrough was witnessed from earth.
