A Divya Desam in Thanjavur district where Lord Srinivasa Perumal (Maanimaaran) is enshrined — praised by Thirumangai Alvar — a small, ancient Vaishnava shrine in the fertile Cauvery delta heartland of the Chola kingdom.
Overview
Thirukkandanur is a Divya Desam in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, enshrining Srinivasa Perumal — also known here as Maanimaaran (the one who rescues the jewel, or the jewel-hued saviour). Thirumangai Alvar sang pasurams for this kshetra in his Periya Thirumozhi, making it part of his comprehensive circuit of the 108. Thanjavur district, the heartland of the great Chola kingdom, is extraordinarily rich in temple heritage — the Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur, the Airavatesvara at Darasuram, and dozens of other magnificent shrines cluster in this region. Thirukkandanur, though less architecturally grand than those Shaiva monuments, holds its special place as a Divya Desam in the Cauvery delta's sacred geography. The Cauvery river, seen as the earthly Ganga of the south, flows through this region, and the agricultural fertility of the delta gave the Chola kings the resources to patronise these temples extensively.
Sacred Narrative
Maanimaaran — the jewel-hued rescuer — alludes to a local legend in which Vishnu appeared to save a devotee who had lost a precious jewel (maani) that was an heirloom of religious significance. Vishnu is said to have guided the devotee to recover the jewel, demonstrating that divine grace operates in the simplest acts of everyday life. The name also carries the theological meaning of Vishnu as the most precious gem — the ultimate jewel of existence — who rescues souls from the cycle of birth and death.
