Overview
Thirukarambhanur is a Divya Desam in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, where the deity is Purushothama Perumal — 'the Supreme Person', the Uttama Purusha of Vishnu theology who transcends both the perishable (kshara) and the imperishable (akshara) aspects of existence. This name comes directly from the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 15), making Thirukarambhanur a temple whose very deity name encapsulates one of the great Upanishadic insights. Thirumangai Alvar sang pasurams for this kshetra in his Periya Thirumozhi, meditating on Vishnu's supreme nature here. The Cuddalore district hosts several Divya Desams in close proximity — Thiruppuliyur, Thiruchirupuliyur, Thirukarambhanur, and Thiruvahindrapuram — making this a significant pilgrimage belt on the Coromandel coast. The temple is set in the fertile coastal plains with traditional Dravidian architecture.
Sacred Narrative
The local tradition holds that the great sage Durvasa, famous for his fierce temper, came to this site to perform penance. After completing his austerities with complete surrender, Vishnu appeared before him in the Purushothama form — transcending all aspects and attributes — showing Durvasa the vision beyond his analytical mind. The sage, humbled and transformed, composed hymns of praise and declared this place as the spot where the Supreme Person (Purushothama) is most accessible to sincere seekers.
