A Divya Desam in the Kaveri delta where Lord Sowrirajan (Vishnu as the one who bears the plough) stands in splendour — one of the lesser-known but richly hymned Desams of Thirumangai Alvar near Sirkazhi.
Overview
Thirukannapuram is a Divya Desam in the Kaveri delta, located near Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district. The presiding deity is Sowrirajan — a name meaning the lord who bears the plough, associated with the spirit of Balarama, Krishna's elder brother — though here worshipped as a form of Vishnu himself. Thirumangai Alvar sang Mangalasasanam for this kshetra in the Periya Tirumozhi, praising the deity's golden form and serene presence. The temple's architecture follows classic Chola-period Dravidian conventions with a medium-height gopuram and a well-maintained sacred tank. The goddess here is Abhivriddhini Thayar. The landscape is flat Kaveri deltaic plains — paddy fields stretch around the temple, and the rural serenity adds a contemplative quality to the visit. The site is part of the pilgrimage cluster that includes Sirkazhi and the nearby Thirukkannangudi and Thirukkannamangai temples.
Sacred Narrative
The legend here connects to Balarama's avatar tradition. Vishnu is said to have once manifested in this region as the wielder of the plough (Sowri) to help a devotee farmer whose land had become unproductive. The deity himself is said to have tilled the sacred soil, and the land around the temple was thus blessed with perpetual fertility — giving the site its agricultural sanctity and the deity his plough-bearing name.
