A Divya Desam in the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu where Lord Trivikrama Perumal is enshrined — praised by Thirumangai Alvar — part of the sacred cluster of Vishnu shrines in the fertile plains north of Chennai.
Overview
Thiruevvulur is a Divya Desam situated in the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, in the broad agricultural plains north of Chennai. The presiding deity is Trivikrama Perumal — Vishnu who encompassed the cosmos in three giant strides, a form celebrated throughout the Divya Desam tradition. Thirumangai Alvar, who traversed all of Tamil Nadu to compose hymns for every Divya Desam, celebrated the divine here in his Periya Thirumozhi. The Thiruvallur region is rich in Vaishnava heritage, being home to Thiruvalur (Veeraraghava Perumal), one of the most celebrated Divya Desams. The temples here maintain the classical Dravidian style with sacred tanks and multiple shrines. Pilgrims based in Chennai often undertake the northern Tamil Nadu Divya Desam circuit covering Thiruevvulur, Thiruninravur, Thiruvallur, and Thirukadalmallai in a two-day journey.
Sacred Narrative
As with other Trivikrama shrines, the mythology here centres on the Vamana avatar — Vishnu appearing as a dwarf brahmin before Mahabali and then expanding to cosmic proportions. Local tradition adds that a king (possibly named Evvulan) who ruled this area witnessed the three-stride miracle and was liberated from his pride through the vision of cosmic Vishnu, leading to his founding of this temple in gratitude.
