A Divya Desam in Cuddalore district where Lord Trivikrama Perumal is enshrined in a small, ancient shrine — praised by Thirumangai Alvar — part of the Cuddalore belt of Vaishnava sacred sites.
Overview
Thiruchirupuliyur is one of the Divya Desams situated in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, distinct from the similarly named Thiruppuliyur in the same region. The deity here is Trivikrama Perumal — Vishnu as the cosmic strider who measured the universe in three steps. Thirumangai Alvar composed pasurams for this kshetra in his Periya Thirumozhi. The name 'chiru-puliyur' (small Puliyur, or the Puliyur of the small tiger) distinguishes it from larger Puliyur sites in Tamil Nadu. This temple, like other Divya Desams in the Cuddalore belt, carries the deep imprint of Pallava and Chola patronage, and the architecture reflects the early medieval Dravidian style. The Cuddalore region's spiritual density is remarkable — several Divya Desams cluster here, making it one of the most rewarding circuits for Vaishnava pilgrims in the entire Tamil Nadu coastal belt.
Sacred Narrative
The Trivikrama mythology underlies this kshetra. Local lore adds that a small tiger (chiru puli) — a sacred forest creature — lived near this shrine and served as a perpetual guard of the deity's sanctum. Vishnu was so pleased by the tiger's devotion that he promised to remain at this site in the Trivikrama form so long as the forest around it endured. The tiger became associated with the protection of this sacred ground.
