Overview
Thirucherai is a Divya Desam near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, where Vishnu is worshipped as Saranatha Perumal — 'the Lord who is the Ultimate Refuge' (sarana = refuge, natha = lord). This name encapsulates the core theological concept of Prapatti or Saranagati in Sri Vaishnavism: the act of complete surrender to Vishnu as one's sole refuge. Thirumangai Alvar sang pasurams for this kshetra in his Periya Thirumozhi, and the verses here are particularly focused on the theme of surrender and divine protection. The consort goddess is Komalavalli Thayar. Kumbakonam is a natural pilgrimage base for this area, home to several Divya Desams itself (the Thirukkudanthai trio). Thirucherai, like the Oppiliyappan Koil at Thiruvinnagar, is situated in the same agricultural district of the Cauvery delta.
Sacred Narrative
Saranatha — the Lord of Refuge — earned this name through a myth of the sage Gajendra (the elephant devotee, also associated with Thiruparamkundram). At Thirucherai, the tradition says it was the sage Hrita who, persecuted by powerful enemies and despairing, threw himself at Vishnu's feet with the words 'You are my only shelter.' Vishnu immediately manifested and destroyed all threats, declaring that anyone who surrenders here with 'Saranam' (I take refuge) will be unconditionally protected. The shrine thus became a saranagati (refuge-surrender) kshetra.
