Overview
Thiruchangur is a Divya Desam located near Uraiyur in Tiruchirappalli district, Tamil Nadu. Uraiyur is the ancient capital of the Early Cholas, a city of great antiquity and historical significance. The presiding deity is Trivikrama Perumal — Vishnu as the cosmic strider — and Thirumangai Alvar sang pasurams for this kshetra in the Periya Thirumozhi. Tiruchirappalli district already contains one of the two supreme Divya Desams — Srirangam — on the Kaveri island. Thiruchangur, in contrast, is a quieter, more intimate kshetra, showing how the Divya Desam tradition encompasses not just grand pilgrimage centres but also village temples of equal theological depth. Uraiyur itself, as the ancient Chola capital mentioned in Sangam literature, gives the surrounding region deep historical resonance. The temple maintains the traditions of the Thenkalai Sri Vaishnava school.
Sacred Narrative
Uraiyur's significance in ancient Tamil history intersects with Vaishnava mythology at Thiruchangur: the local tradition holds that the ancient Chola kings, before they had moved their capital to Thanjavur or Trichy, worshipped Vishnu at this site. The cosmic striding form of Trivikrama was the royal deity of conquest — a king who worshipped Trivikrama sought to extend his domain across the earth just as Vishnu had measured it with three steps.
