The Divya Desam on the southern Tamil Nadu coast where Lord Aadikesava Perumal (Dharmashastra Perumal) is worshipped — the site where Rama prayed before crossing to Lanka, with a unique sand (darbha grass) bed-worship tradition.
Overview
Thiru Pullani (also spelled Thiruppullani) is a Divya Desam located in Ramanathapuram district, close to the sea coast and near Rameswaram. It is uniquely associated with the Ramayana narrative — this is the site where Rama is said to have lain on a bed of darbha grass (kusa grass) and prayed to the sea-god Varuna for three days, requesting passage to Lanka to rescue Sita. The presiding deity is Aadikesava Perumal (also called Dharmashastra Perumal), Vishnu in a reclining posture on darbha grass rather than on the serpent Adi Shesha — the only Divya Desam where this grass-bed iconography is the canonical form. Thirumangai Alvar sang Mangalasasanam here. The goddess consort is Pankaja Valli Thayar. The Ramayana pilgrimage route (Ramayana trail) passes through this temple. The setting — coastal flat land, close to the Palk Strait — has a distinctly austere, wind-swept character.
Sacred Narrative
Rama, unable to cross the sea to Lanka, performed a three-day prayer to Varuna (the sea-god) lying prostrate on a bed of darbha grass at this coastal spot. When Varuna did not appear, Rama's patience broke and he readied his Brahmastra to dry the ocean. Varuna then appeared and promised that the monkey-army bridge (Ramasetu) would hold. This site of Rama's urgent prayer and Varuna's response was consecrated as the place of Vishnu's grace through devotional persistence.
