A Divya Desam at Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district where Vishnu is worshipped as Vetha Perumal (Lord of the Vedas), praised by Thirumangai Alvar in the Veda-forest setting.

Overview

Thiru Asiriyam is one of several Divya Desams situated in or near Sirkazhi (Sirkali) in Nagapattinam district, one of Tamil Nadu's most sacred towns which is also the birthplace of the great Shaiva saint Thirugnana Sambandar. The Vaishnava presence here — centered on the Vetha Perumal (Lord of the Vedas) shrine — coexists with the powerful Shaiva tradition in this remarkable town.

The name 'Asiriyam' relates to the classical Tamil poetic meter in which some of the Alvar hymns are composed — the Thiruvasiriyam of Nammalvar uses this meter — and the site is connected to the teaching tradition. Thirumangai Alvar praised the Vetha Perumal here, celebrating a Vishnu who is identical with the Vedas themselves: the text, the knowledge, and the knower united in a single divine form. The Cauvery delta landscape surrounds Sirkazhi with rice fields and coconut groves.

Sacred Narrative

When the Vedas were stolen by two demons (Madhu and Kaitabha) at the beginning of creation and hidden in the primordial ocean, Vishnu took the form of a fish (Matsya) to recover them. Here at Thiru Asiriyam, Vishnu is said to have rested after this cosmic retrieval, having restored the Vedas to Brahma. He manifested as Vetha Perumal — the lord who is the Vedas — to remain accessible to all students and teachers of sacred knowledge.
