A Divya Desam in deep southern Tamil Nadu where Lord Kolavallan Perumal (the triumphant lord) is worshipped — praised by Nammalvar in hymns that describe the deity holding the discus high after cosmic victory.
Overview
Thenthiruperai (Tenthiruperai) is a Divya Desam in the Tirunelveli district of deep southern Tamil Nadu, in the cluster of Pandiyan-country shrines near the convergence of the Tamirabarani river area. The presiding deity is Kolavallan Perumal — the lord who is master of victory and cosmic order — worshipped in a standing posture with the Sudarshana Chakra held aloft. Nammalvar sang Mangalasasanam for this Desam in the Tiruvoimozhi. The word 'kolavallan' suggests one who holds his head high in victory (kol = sceptre of victory, vallan = the capable one). The temple architecture reflects Pandya-period Dravidian style, with carved panels depicting the ten avatars and divine attendants. The goddess consort is Pattaabhi Valli Thayar. The Tamirabarani river region is one of the most ancient settled areas of Tamil Nadu, and these deep-southern Divya Desams carry an atmosphere of antiquity undisturbed by modernization.
Sacred Narrative
The legend at Thenthiruperai tells of a great battle between the Devas and asuras in which the balance of cosmic power tilted against righteousness. Vishnu appeared in this specific region of the Pandya country, raised the Sudarshana Chakra above his head in victory, and restored dharmic order. The place was thus consecrated as the site of this cosmic triumph, and the deity is eternally depicted in his post-victory posture — chakra raised, boons flowing.
