The Divya Desam in Thoothukudi district where Lord Kalyana Venkateswara (also Thothadri Appan) is worshipped — a river-island temple on the Tamirabarani praised by Nammalvar, significant as the town that also contains the Thiruvaikundam shrine.
Overview
Srivaikuntam is one of the deep-south Divya Desam towns in Thoothukudi district where the Tamirabarani river flows. The principal Divya Desam here is the Thothadri Appan (Kalyana Venkateswara) temple — a standing Vishnu deity flanked by Sri Devi and Bhu Devi, set on the Tamirabarani riverbank. Nammalvar's Tiruvoimozhi includes verses for this Desam, and the Thenkalai Vaishnava acharya lineage has strong connections to this kshetra. Srivaikuntam itself is a significant pilgrimage town, housing both this Divya Desam and the adjacent Thiruvaikundam temple (the reclining Vaikunthanatha), making the town effectively a two-Desam centre. The Tamirabarani flows beside and occasionally through the temple complex during monsoon, and the seasonal flooding itself is considered a purifying divine gift. The goddess consort is Vaikunta Valli Thayar.
Sacred Narrative
The Puranic account holds that Vishnu appeared at Srivaikuntam as the auspicious bridegroom (Kalyana Venkateswara — the one who grants auspicious marriages), specifically to bless the sage Vibhishana who had worshipped here after returning from Lanka. Vibhishana, bearing the gratitude and peace of one who has been liberated from the demonic heritage of his family, prayed here for Vishnu to remain as the eternally auspicious lord for all future devotees.
