A Divya Desam in Kerala — the Sree Krishna (Vishnu) temple at Puliyur near Kottayam — praised by Nammalvar — one of the Kerala Divya Desams in the central Kerala midlands between the Ghats and the backwaters.
Overview
Puliyur is one of the Kerala Divya Desams, located in Kottayam district in the central Kerala midlands. The deity here is enshrined in the classical Kerala Vishnu temple tradition — intimate in scale, rich in woodwork and murals, with the distinctive Kerala-style sloping roof architecture. Nammalvar, the greatest among the twelve Alvars, included this kshetra in his Tiruvoimozhi, making it part of the canon of all 108 sacred sites. 'Puliyur' means 'tiger town' in Tamil — a name shared with several sacred sites across South India (including in Tamil Nadu) that traditionally had a protected forest or grove associated with them. The Kerala Divya Desams are remarkable for being widely distributed across the state while sharing a common architectural and ritual tradition. Puliyur is part of the Kottayam Divya Desam cluster that includes Thrikkodithanam.
Sacred Narrative
The tiger (puli) association in the place name Puliyur connects to a local myth of a great devotee who was a forest dweller. A tiger that roamed the area became the faithful guardian of this devotee's daily puja, sitting still while offerings were made. Vishnu, seeing the tiger's devotion as pure and unforced (unlike humans who worship out of fear or desire), blessed this place and established his presence here — showing that divine grace is available to all creatures, not just humans.
